There is a short window at the very start of the day when everything feels suspended. Before footsteps mark the sand. Before voices carry across the beach. Before the sea fully wakes.
Streamline Serenity was born in that moment. Painted originally in acrylic on canvas, the piece captures the translucent stream at Mawgan Porth as it slides gently towards the ocean. The water is shallow and clear, the rocks sit quietly beneath the surface, and the sky holds that soft early-morning blue that only lasts for minutes. This is Cornwall at its most understated… not dramatic, not loud… simply present. Over time, this painting has become one of those pieces people often pause at longest. Perhaps because it doesn’t demand attention. It invites stillness instead. The artwork is now available as a fine art print in various sizes, allowing that sense of calm to live on well beyond the beach it was inspired by. Soft water. Gentle movement. A quiet beginning. I love painting and teaching art here in Cornwall and wherever I am or you are.
This is one of my students. The smile says it all. What I love most about teaching is watching people realise they can do far more than they ever thought possible. When light, colour, shadow, depth and perspective are explained clearly, confidence arrives quickly — and faces soften into the joy you see here. From Mawgan Porth to Cairns and everywhere in between, I teach the same foundations: how we see, how light changes over distance, how colour shifts with atmosphere, and how to build believable depth. These principles work in watercolour, acrylic, pastel, pencil… any medium. People learn in person here in Cornwall, on Zoom, and through my online course. Some come for fun. Some for confidence. Some to reconnect with creativity. And some offer lessons as a gift, knowing that meaningful experiences feel very special as the year turns. Wherever you are, you’re welcome. When a cat portrait I painted ten years ago suddenly resurfaced, I paused. The painting shows a quiet tabby, eyes steady, markings built with slow layers to create texture and form. It was painted in Cornwall, and I remember the patience it needed… the stillness… the steady decisions made one mark at a time.
What struck me most is how clearly it reflects what I teach now. Strong artwork doesn’t come from copying. It grows from understanding: the stance of the head, the values that shape the muzzle, the subtle colour temperatures that make fur believable. Everything rests on proportion, tone and clarity. Seeing it again reminded me that growth in art is cumulative. Every drawing, every imperfect attempt, every resolved edge becomes part of the next step. The same principles I used then… and continue to refine now… are the foundations I teach in lessons. Learn the fundamentals deeply and the voice you develop becomes truly your own. Here in Mawgan Porth and across Cornwall I still paint portraits of people and animals, and I still teach those core foundations with the same belief: art flourishes when you understand what you’re seeing rather than copy what you think is there. That rediscovered portrait is quiet proof that careful looking, honest craft and love of the subject never lose their value. Last night I received a message from a couple who commissioned a painting of Mawgan Porth Beach here in Cornwall. They waited until the evening to unwrap it so they could sit quietly and take it in.
They wrote that the painting shifts and changes depending on distance. Up close it’s fragments of colour… marks… movement. Stepping back… everything unites and the shapes settle into an entirely different view. They said they look forward to noticing new things for years. That reflection captures something I love about painting Cornwall. The coastline changes every minute. Light draws on the wet sand. The tide exposes hidden channels. Colours dance across shallow pools at low tide. When we observe deeply… details gradually reveal themselves. It’s why Mawgan Porth and this North Cornish coast are at the heart of my work. Whether painting… teaching… or walking on the beach… it always shows more with every glance. Art can hold memory too. For many people… a painting of their favourite beach becomes a reminder of stillness… holidays… childhood… or simply the peace of the ocean. I offer originals… commissions… prints… and art lessons in Cornwall and online for those who want to explore sketch… perspective… and paint at a deeper level. If you’d like something created of a place that matters to you… or you have a scene in Cornwall you love… you’re always welcome to ask. Today was my first day back after my holiday, and Mawgan Porth gave us one of those wonderfully dramatic Cornish mornings… shifting skies, sea-spray on the glass, and that unmistakable Atlantic light. Inside, it couldn’t have been more different… calm, warmth, and the gentle conversation that happens when people begin to paint.
This group painted their own views of Mawgan Porth Beach… some complete beginners, some with a little experience, all discovering how to see rather than rush. Watching four totally different interpretations of the same beach appear side by side is always magical. The colours… the movement of the water… the softness of the clouds… each canvas held its own quiet story. Teaching in Mawgan Porth always feels special. The landscape does half the work… the rest is simply helping people notice what’s already there. A beautiful, peaceful morning of creativity. Back home after a beautiful trip to Australia… sunshine, warmth, family and friends… and a quiet chance to breathe and recharge. I also had a moment to introduce a student-friend to the people and places that shaped my Australian life… including the life-changing experience that transformed the way I teach today.
Coming home to Cornwall always feels like returning to the rhythm of the coastline… the light… the stillness. This time of year brings reflection and new beginnings. The run-up to Christmas… gifting season… the spark people feel when they want to start something creative. My work in Cornwall and online is built on clarity and confidence… helping people understand sketch, perspective and paint in simple, powerful ways that change how they see. Whether you’re thinking about Zoom lessons, in-person sessions, online learning, or you’d like a painting, print or commission… this is a lovely moment to begin. It’s good to be home… settled… and ready for what’s next. If you’re missing Cornwall, you can still find its calm and colour through learning to see as artists do.
This series of three online lessons explores the true fundamentals of art – Sketch, Perspective and Paint – each around three hours long and rooted in awareness rather than imitation. ✏️ Sketch – the psychology of how we see We begin by exploring how the mind interprets what the eyes receive. Most people draw what they guess instead of what they actually see. This lesson retrains the eye to observe truthfully – edges, tones and relationships as they really appear. 📐 Perspective – the maths of art Here we uncover the hidden geometry of space and depth. Using real drone footage filmed over Cornwall’s cliffs and beaches, we study how lines converge, how distance alters scale, and how atmosphere shifts with light. The coastline itself becomes our classroom, showing the laws of perspective alive in motion. 🎨 Paint – the physiology of posture and the geology and physics of our surroundings This part connects the body and the environment: how posture, balance and breath affect the line; how the landscape’s structure, minerals and light determine every colour we see. Understanding these physical forces gives paintings truth and vitality. Together, these lessons form a complete visual language – uniting psychology, mathematics, physiology, geology and physics into a single experience of seeing. A quiet extra session offers figure drawing… bringing everything together through the movement and balance of the human form. If you’re missing Cornwall, this is a way to reconnect with its beauty and clarity wherever you are… learning to see, not guess… to understand, not copy. Knowledge that frees you. Artist Mawgan Porth … Visual Awareness … Art At The Beach This print captures one of my favourite places on the North Coast of Cornwall. The cliffs at Carnewas and Bedruthan Steps rise like ancient sentinels above the turquoise sea… waves breathe in and out, wrapping the rocks in white lace. It’s a place that always feels alive, peaceful and powerful all at once.
When I first painted this scene, I remember the stillness between the gusts of wind… the sound of gulls echoing against the cliffs… and that deep sense of perspective that only Cornwall seems to give. The moment you stop and really look, you realise how much the landscape teaches you… about rhythm, light, balance and patience. Teaching and painting here feels like both art and meditation. The cliffs invite you to pause, to notice, to breathe. Students often arrive busy and tense but leave with a new kind of calm… a quiet awareness that changes the way they see. That’s the real secret of art… it begins with looking, not doing. Cornwall has its own kind of magic. It draws you in and opens you up to what’s always been there. Standing above Bedruthan Steps, you can feel that shift… a return to stillness, to connection, to something timeless. This print is a reminder of that feeling… of what happens when you give yourself the gift of slowing down and really seeing. Print: Bedruthan Steps, near Mawgan Porth, on the North Coast of Cornwall. A tranquil painting created near Mylor in Cornwall. The scene shows a lone Boatman tending to his small sailing boat as the tide rests. There’s barely a ripple on the water… just the soft reflection of sky and sail. For me, this painting is about more than a moment on the water. It’s about pause — that quiet space between what was and what’s about to be. Every artist knows that stillness brings clarity. When you stop and look, the world starts to speak in light, reflection and rhythm. Sometimes, a painting says everything words can’t. This work, created by one of my students, captures the calm between light and shadow — that fleeting moment at the end of the day when the beach empties and the world feels at peace. The single figure, long shadow, and soft reflections of the setting sun remind us how powerful simplicity can be. In my lessons, I teach that art isn’t about copying a photograph… it’s about understanding how light, perspective and emotion work together. Once those fundamentals are clear, the magic appears naturally.
