✨ Two wonderful days with a kindred spirit from the USA…
We explored sketch and psychology, then paint — learning how to really look and process what we see. There was fun, laughter, and even an amazing breakfast along the way… proof that art isn’t only about what ends up on the page, but also about the moments, the energy, and the joy of the journey. 🎨💙 I can’t promise breakfast… but I can promise the rest. 👉 Would you like to experience this for yourself? Lessons are available here in Cornwall, via Zoom, or as a pre-recorded online course.

🎨 Still Calm Morning – Meditation, Mawgan Porth
40” x 20” | Acrylic on Canvas Painted on location at Mawgan Porth and completed later in my studio, this piece is all about that luminous stillness you sometimes catch by the sea… when the tide hushes, light stretches long, and the whole world seems to pause and breathe. The layers of Jo Sonja’s acrylics gave me the softness I wanted — letting the reflections glow and the water feel gently alive… not crashing, not roaring, but quietly listening. On a wet, grey day like today, it feels good to be reminded that mornings like this really do exist. A fun and windswept day celebrating love, art and Cornish kindness…
This lovely couple joined me for their second anniversary, and together we painted Seascapes of Mawgan Porth. If you look closely, you’ll see they even painted themselves into their own pictures – a little personal memory they’ll treasure forever. The weather had its own plans with sudden showers and strong winds, but thanks to the Merrymoor Inn, who kindly let us use their covered garden space, we were able to keep painting by the sea. That’s something I love about Mawgan Porth – the way the community always looks after one another. A day full of laughter, paint, and Cornish magic. 💙🌊 ✨ A painting that almost disappears into the day itself…
Here at Mawgan Porth you can see how the colours of the canvas melt seamlessly into the sky, the river, the headland and the golden beach around us. It’s one of those rare moments when art and memory blend so closely that you can’t quite tell where one ends and the other begins. That’s the magic of painting in the place itself… every brushstroke carries the sound of the waves, the warmth of the sand, the laughter of families, the timeless rhythm of the tide. For him, this isn’t just a painting… it’s a piece of this beach, this day, this memory. 🎨 Would you love to capture your own place in Cornwall this way? A commission or lesson might be the start of your own memory on canvas… A Fun Portrait Lesson with a Regular Student
The rain kept us indoors today… so instead of painting on the beach, we turned a one-to-one lesson into a playful exploration of portraiture. We worked not with outlines, but with shapes and space… light and dark… texture and smoothness. It’s amazing how a face comes alive when you stop copying lines and start truly seeing. It felt nostalgic, like rediscovering those timeless fundamentals the old masters used — yet still full of fun and discovery. Most of my sessions are small and personal like this, though I also work with couples, families, and even large groups — my biggest so far was 450 people creating one artwork together. Sometimes the rain closes one door, only to open another. Two brothers stopped to watch me paint… curious at first, then completely hooked.
They listened closely as I shared the hidden secrets in the view — the geology of the cliffs, the maths of perspective, the science of the atmosphere, and the psychology of how we see. All explained in a way that was fun, age-appropriate, and memorable enough to stick with them long after the brushes were packed away. As they painted, they began to notice things they’d never really seen before… how the horizon shifts, how the sea changes shade with each passing cloud, how the rocks and sand hold stories they’d walked past a hundred times without realising. By the end, they both agreed that nobody had ever explained these things to them before… and it made them realise how often we look without truly seeing. The smiles said it all… they left with a handful of beautiful paintings, and a mind full of new ideas. 🎨✨ 🎨💼 This very, very, very young man arrived determined to begin his art collection.
His first choice? One of my largest, most detailed pieces. With only a few pounds of pocket money, we entered into some serious negotiations… his mum smiling as she watched it all unfold. In the end, he made his proud first acquisition… a little painting I happened to have in my bag for just such occasions. With some change still jingling in his pocket, the pride on his face says everything. The beginning of a collector’s journey… 💙✨ 🎨✨ This morning I had the joy of teaching two young artists on the beach. They’d seen me do a quick demo the other day and wanted to try a lesson for themselves.
They were amazed at what they created and such a delight to teach. Their smiles throughout were enormous (in the photo they’d taken off their caps and sunglasses, so the sun made them squint!). 🌊💙 Later that afternoon, their parents told me: “They both said you were a brilliant teacher, and they now have a much increased enthusiasm for art.” And later still, they shared this beautiful review: “Our children had a lesson with Jeanni this morning and what a lesson it was … She captured their imaginations and made them look at art in a new way … They learnt so much and created a little masterpiece each to take away. More importantly, they could recall the knowledge learned and look forward to using this to create other fabulous works in the future!” Moments like these are why I love teaching. If you’d love to paint your own seascape and take home a memory of Cornwall, get in touch … lessons are available for all ages and abilities. ✨ Today was filled with conversations, laughter, and a wonderful lesson this morning… and this afternoon brought something really special.
This lovely lady bought one of my little paintings and asked if I could paint her family into it… a permanent reminder of their happy holidays at Mawgan Porth. There’s something so magical about watching people’s faces light up as I paint their children and loved ones into a scene… turning a beautiful view into their memory, captured forever on canvas. Holidays fade, but those moments… those smiles… stay. 🎨💙🌊 “It’s such a joy to watch this lovely student bringing together everything from my Secret of Art Masterclass – sketch, perspective and paint – and turning it into something so atmospheric. Yesterday at Mawgan Porth she chose watercolour, and her final piece carries such a gentle, ethereal quality while standing firmly on the fundamentals. She has explored every way of learning with me – the pre-recorded online course, face-to-face sessions, and live lessons via Zoom – each in focused three-hour lessons. It’s good to know you can move between them depending on what suits your location or rhythm, and watching how seamlessly the knowledge transfers is one of the best parts of teaching. Her smile says it all.”
